Activities for Digital Storytelling Student Summer Camp

Session #1 Welcome Campers!

Instruction

  • Introductions

  • Pre-Assessment of student technology skills
  • Overview of summer camp using a PowerPoint presentations

  • hand-out laptops and digital cameras to groups

  • Provide a quick overview as needed for the cameras or laptops

First Project

  • Use the skills you already have to create a PowerPoint or iPhoto presentation about the summer camp kids and teachers

Expectations for first project:

  • Each group is responsible for creating at least one slide for each group member

  • Use the digital camera to snap pictures 

  • Label the slide and add one or two facts about the person

  • Be Creative!

  • Complete the activity on time

  • Share your presentation with the group

Session #2 Editing Digital Images

Instruction

  • View the PowerPoint presentation titled Digital Storytelling with Digital Images

  • Editing digital pictures with the help of your teachers

Project

  • For independent practice edit a picture of yourself to be posted to the website. You may add backgrounds or use some of the other features of the editing program Adobe PhotoShop Elements.

Session #3 Planning to tell a Great Story

Instruction

  • View the PowerPoint presentation about creating digital stories

  • Introduce the Palm Pilots and keyboards

  • Beam giraffe for extra practice during camp

Project

  • Use the memo pad to record ideas for digital stories

  • Draft storyboards are due tomorrow!

  • Bring a book for a book talk tomorrow

Session #4 Digital Video!

Instruction

  • In small groups peer edit the storyboards

  • Hand in storyboards for review

Session #5 Filming Time

Instruction

  • iMovie instruction if needed

  • Filming tips and tricks

  • Select group roles for each member

Project

  • Begin filming your first project

Session #6 Editing Strategies

Instruction

  • Introduce editing features in iMovie as needed

  • Troubleshoot any questions or concerns about editing

Session #7 Filming and Editing

Instruction

  • Advanced features may need explanation

  • Demonstrate how to save a file to a CD or DVD

  • As groups finish, start new storyboards for additional projects

  • Project

  • Continue to work on developing first or second projects, deadline looms

Session #8 The Viewing Celebration

Instruction

  • Complete the post evaluation

  • Review the technology and process skills covered in camp

Project

  • Deadline is here!

  • Participate in the Viewing Celebration
