Overview of Digital Storytelling Student Summer Technology Camp
Summer Camp 2003! Ottawa Elementary Schools sponsored a Summer Tech Camp June 3 - June 12 2003.
Twelve 5th grade students from The "campers" learned how to use Palm Pilot hand-held computers, movie cameras, and digital cameras to produce their own iMovies, slide shows, and PowerPoint presentations. Software programs that were used to produce the projects were: Inspiration (graphic organizer to plan storyboards), Palm Pilot software for notetaking and learning to write on the notes screen, Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation program, iMovie for editing movies, iPhoto for producing slide shows, Adobe Photoshop Elements for enhancing photographs, iTunes for recording music from a CD, and Internet search skills for finding clipart and reference material for books and authors. The ProjectsGroup PowerPoint Presentation - Groups were formed to produce a PowerPoint slide show. Each group member designed their own personal slide with a picture and information. Book Talk - Groups were formed according to a book that was familiar to the members. The "campers" used Inspiration and Palm Pilots to produce story boards for an iMovie about their book. Scripts were written on Palm Pilots. Each group was provided with a movie camera to record their movie. Group members assumed the roles of writer, producer, director, camera operator, and editor. iPhoto Slide Show - After viewing a teacher-made iPhoto slide show, the students were presented with three themes: the Alphabet, Numbers, and Colors. Using digital cameras and photo enhancement software, the students created their iPhoto slide shows. Music selected from a CD added background theme music to student slide shows. Post-Assessment Project - Students formed groups to produce a PowerPoint Presentation expressing their experiences at Tech Camp. Slides were created based on learning activities and favorite activities. Each slide contained a photo or clip art. On the last day of Summer Tech Camp, parents were invited to attend a showcase of the student projects. The movies and slide shows have all been saved as QuickTime movies or PowerPoint HTML web pages. QuickTime movies are best downloaded for viewing on high-speed connections. Students use various digital tools including handheld computers to collect images and weave them together into various final products.
