Family Math Nights

Hi I am Meg Ormiston, or "Math Meg" as I used at school! For many years I helped school districts coordinate Family Math Nights by guiding them through the planning process and keynoting the events. One of my events is featured on the NCREL site! http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/content/cntareas/math/ma4garn.htm

For now my Family Math Nights are around my kitchen table trying to help my young boys make sense of their math homework, leaving less time to help other districts directly. So, with that said I reached into my digital filing cabinet and I am making all my planning tools, digital filing cabinet, presentation, graphics and ideas available to all of you hard working teachers, administrators and volunteers. Best of all everything is FREE!

Reach into my Family Math digital filing cabinet and pull out what you need to make your event a success! For know I am only available for the keynote presentations, not the planning, so please take a moment to share if these resources are helpful! meg@techteachers.com

Tips from Meg, Been There Done That!

A good starting place is taking a look at what other school districts have done to make their events a success.Family Math nights from various districts. Also, as you plan, make sure to focus on publicity, do anything you can to get people to put away their math anxiety for the night and come and work as a family. Teachers are also critical to this event, and rewarding your volunteers is very important. As a former classroom teacher evening sessions like this make for a long day, so do everything you can to reward them for helping out!

Each event I have held started with a whole group meeting in the gym and then breakouts into grade alike groups for manipulative activities organized by the teachers. Parents work through activities and problems along with their children. On a number of occasions each family left with a goodie bag to help with homework, things like dice, spinners, pattern blocks, base ten blocks, booklet about homework help, etc.
